Labor Day in the Black Hills

For Labor Day we decided we would take off to South Dakota since it really isn't that far away from Denver. Tyler wanted to full on camp, I wanted to stay in a hotel, so we compromised and stayed at a KOA, so at least we could shower on occasion. They had a great pancake breakfast, the kids loved the playground, jumping pillow and pool. Our spot was a bit more primitive than the website "virtual tour" depicted, (I'm not sure that the picture was actually from the same KOA) but we survived. We drove through Custer State Park and along the Needles Hwy., where we saw wild burrows (enjoy the pictures, they are NOT shy animals.) We also saw quite a few Buffalo (I know they are really called Bison, but whatever). We went to Mt. Rushmore twice because we missed the lighting the first time we were there, and Macy was not going to leave without seeing them "light it up". We went through Wind Cave and Jewel Cave. Notice that there are some pictures of Wind Cave, but none from Jewel Cave, Keaton did not enjoy Jewel Cave therefore none of us or the people in our tour enjoyed Jewel Cave. It was a great little getaway, even though I was feeling my age after sleeping on a defective air mattress for three nights.

Moments to remember for the trip:

Tyler introducing the song "This Little Light of Mine" Although, he only knows two verses, so if anyone can help us out with this it would be appreciated.

Keaton's Buffalo imitation.

Macy's song (a Macy original) that lasted the entire tour of the Wind Cave, she even got a 5 yr. old boy to join in with her.

1st night: air mattress flat @ 3:00 a.m. 2nd night: air mattress flat @ 11:00 p.m. 3rd night: hard ground

This video is Keaton at Mt. Rushmore, it is not a very good video but it shows his excellent verbal skills. He was so past the point of tired that he was insane. In case, you can't understand him he is saying either, "Ready, Set, Go" or "1, 2, 3, Go." He did this about a hundred times, but it was funny to me Every time.

Camping is the greatest huh?? We actually haven't attempted actual camping with our two kids, but we have been wanting to (well.. kinda wanting to!) Air mattresses suck! You said it perfectly; they just always go flat and we are getting way too old for the hard ground! Looks like you had a great time and what a fun place to visit. I have never been there! Give it up for Mt. Rushmore! Love the wild donkeys too!
